Sherin Mathews death: Wesley Mathews re-arrested and facing 99 years in prison

Wesley Mathews, foster father of 3-year-old Indian girl Sherin Mathews who faced a mysterious death re-arrested after he changed his previous statement. Police in Texas has not ruled out the possibility of more arrests. Wesley had previously claimed that Sherin went missing after he sent her outside their home at around 3 am on October 7 as punishment for not drinking her milk.

The foster father revised his statement after the Police found the dead body of Sherin Mathews in a tunnel beneath a road. The body was found about one km from the house of her adoptive parents, Wesley and Sini Mathews. A warrant issued against Wesley Mathews said he physically assisted Sherin in drinking her milk when she wouldn’t listen to him. “She was coughing and her breathing slowed,” the warrant reads. Eventually, Wesley Mathews no longer felt a pulse on the child and believed she had died. He admitted to police that he disposed of the child’s body after she choked on her milk.

Richardson police spokesman sergeant Kevin Perlich said on that the probe is continuing, despite the revised statement by Wesley. Wesley has been charged with injury to a child, a felony punishable by a maximum 99 years in prison, Richardson police said. Wesley’s wife Sini Mathews, who is a registered nurse, was reportedly sleeping in her room when the incident occurred. She cooperated with police to identify Sherin’s body by providing the dental records of the child. However, the Richardson Police on Tuesday made a plea for Sini to agree to speak with the police. She has reportedly not cooperated with the Police.
