High Court orders this Congress leader to pay Rs 10K as fine

The Delhi High Court ordered a popular Congress leader to pay Rs 10,000 for “wasting 20 valuable minutes of the court” by his plea filed against a show cause notice issued by the passport office for allegedly furnishing false details to them.

According to court sources, Justice Vibhu Bhakru told the Congress leader Jagdish Tytler  , “You have wasted 20 valuable minutes of the court following which a cost of Rs 10,000 will be imposed on you.” Tytler had moved the court challenging a show cause notice issued by the passport authorities seeking to know why his passport should not be impounded for allegedly furnishing false details for renewal of his travel document.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had earlier informed the court that Tytler had furnished false information to the passport office that there was no criminal case pending against him.

However, a case had been going on against him in the Patiala House Court. The court was also told that he had already received the renewed passport even when his application seeking a no-objection certificate from the court was pending.

Appearing for Tytler, senior advocate Arvind Nigam informed the court that it was a bonafide mistake and the leader had no intention of hiding this fact from the passport authorities.

Following this, the court asked him to show from records where he had voluntarily informed the trial court that it was a bonafide mistake. Nigam said the passport authorities initially issued three show cause notices to Tytler, which were quashed by the appellate authority, after which a fourth notice was issued and later withdrawn.

He said the authorities then issued a fifth show cause notice by invoking several new provisions and it was done with complete non-application of mind and they cannot keep on issuing such notices
