Tamil Nadu theatres have decided to take on playing National anthem ahead of movies as management, cautious of consequences be altered, have adopted a wait and watch approach.
Supreme Court declared a judgment that playing anthem before movie showing was non-compulsory until a central government-constituted inter-ministerial committee took a call. A spokesperson of SPI Cinemas told organization had a “discussion” following the Supreme Court verdict. “We decided to continue because there was no opposition from our customers,” said the SPI representative, requesting anonymity.

We will continue playing for a few more weeks and then decide,” the theatre management’s representative said, requesting anonymity. Abirami Ramanathan, president of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ Federation and who owns Abirami Cinemas, said he felt he had a part to play in instilling patriotic feeling in moviegoers. “I don’t think any member in our association feels strongly about the anthem to stop playing it.
