The park is named after the famous hunter, Jim Corbett, who gave fame to this land in his book ” The Man Eaters of Kumaon”. The book had real life accounts of hunting down tigers. He helped set up sanctuary here which was called “Hailey Park” in 1936. Eventually Project Tiger was initiated from the same place.

The park is open from mid November to mid june. It can get quite hot after march but then it also provides an opportunity to see the animals making it in to the river to quench their thirst. The nearest airport to this place is at Phoolbagh, Pantnagar at 51 kilometres away and the nearest railway station is at Ramnagar(21 kms way)
Corbett National Park is situated in the Kumaon hills in Nainital district in Uttarakhand. Spread over an area of 520 sqkms, this place features about 580 species of birds, 50 species of mammals and 26 species of reptiles. If that is not enough to satisfy a wildlife lover, there is abundance of trees of different kinds as well. The ridges of the hills are mostly dominated by sal trees but there are grasslands and Bamboo in the lower portion. There is also the river Ramganga which flows through the park and adds to its beauty.
For those who visit this place, at times it can be hard to find tigers here, but other animals are easier to spot. The easiest one to spot, thanks to its huge size, is elephant. they usually move in groups. Besides elephant and tiger there are animals like Sambar, chital, sloth bear, jungle fowl etc. The place offer plenty of opportunities to avid bird watchers too. There are machans on which you can sit to view birds and animals. The museum at the entrance of the park provides valuable insights in to the history of the park.
