Airports are known to maintain the highest standard of operation. But the new International Airport in Pakistan, only 30 kilometres from its capital, set a new low only a few hours after its commencement of operation. Apparently, the Conveyor Belt had malfunctioned and passengers had to wait for more than three hours to get hands to their baggage. Travellers had lost their patience by then, as they climbed over the belt and even infiltrated in to the restricted area to get hold of their possessions. Someone who could see the funny side of it all, captured the incident on his smart phone and posted it in Facebook with the caption “New Islamabad airport, but old people. How change comes”.

The incident had split the opinion among Pakistan’s public as some blamed the authority for improper administration while others preferred to point out the unruly behaviour of passengers in a place where they are expected to maintain strict order. British member of Parliament who was also a traveller however was utterly dissatisfied with the incident and used twitter to vent her frustration.
Over three hours just to get our luggage and finally leave #ISB new airport, others had been waiting for more than 5 hours after long haul flights, staff saying airport not equipped and opened prematurely and passengers not happy #Embarrassing

The Airport was made spending big money as the proposed budget of 32 million was stretched to 102 million, thanks to the administrative inefficiency. The airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi a day before and wouldn’t have imagined that it was soon going to have an embarrassment like this. One can only hope that issues are fixed and sanity is restored in the airport soon.
