Hardly after a few days of the news of a ‘super glue’ that can fix broken bones came out, scientists are surprising us again with a ‘Portable 3D Skin Printer’ that can help repair deep wounds. In a first of its kind invention, the device can form, deposit and fix tissues on skin wounds and it only take two minutes ! Well You take almost two minutes to fix a medical adhesive bandage to your wound. The 3D printer actually looks like a White-out tape dispenser, but in the place of tape roll it has a device that creates tissues. This technique can even fix deep wounds.

The damage that involves three layers of human skin called epidermis, dermis and hypodermis is what is usually termed as ‘Deep skin wounds’. The common treatement for such wounds involve a method called “Split thickness grafting” which is about removing the two layers of the skin- epidermis and dermis and replacing it with skin from a healthy donor. This method comes with its own set of risks like reduced healing, loss of skin sensation, infection and much more.
The 3D skin printer developed by the scientists will hopefully be getting around these hurdles. Dr Alex Guenther, one of the researchers from the University of Toronto said that most of the current bioprinters are bulky, expensive, work at low speeds and are not compatible with the clinical application. The team is working on adding more capabilities to the device liking increasing the surface area that the device can heal. We hope the device will soon fix burns and wounds.
