Rajnikanth is not having the best of times recently as it happens to most people who are new to politics. But then Kaala seems to be the right film for him arriving at the right moment. He is portrayed as a common man, a leader of the down trodden who takes on an influential politician/a leader of real estate mafia. Just the perfect role to do when people criticise you for your political predilections.

Rajni is the lone saviour of the slum- Dharavi, a place which Hari dada(Nana patekar) wants to demolish and rebuild a modern ‘digital Dharavi’ . There is nothing new in the story, but the charisma of Ranji Kanth is what sets the movie apart. He shows incredible energy that will give the youngsters a run for their money. A lot of scenes in the film are sure to resonate with Thalaivar fans, especially the interval block scene where Rajni fights in a mumbai flyover. The supporting cast excels where Hima Qureshi and Nana Patekar stands out.
P A Ranjith has tried to rework the formula where white is considered as pure and black is perceived as bad and evil and it works to a good effect. The art direction has done a great job in recreating the slums of Dharavi. The movie is quite length though, at 2 hours and 46 minutes it tends to lag at a few places. But If you are a thalaivar fan, just book your tickets now. Like fine wine, the superstar is getting better with age and has chosen a role which helps him bring out his larger than life image in a convincing manner.
