Rajasthan couple burn their 10 months old baby with hot needle on neck, forehead

In Rajasthan’s Banswara, a 10-month-old baby was allegedly burnt on the neck and forehead using a hot iron needle as part of a superstitious ritual to cure the baby’s illness. Medical Officers said that the condition of the baby was critical and that he was being treated at a hospital in Udaipur.

10 months old Devla, son of Nandlal who is a resident of Tejpur Village, was suffering from an ailment for 10 days. After consulting some local quacks and finding that it would not do any good, Nandlal and his wife resorted to a superstitious practice. The couple heated a needle by putting it in a lit up pyre made in the middle of the road in Bhupendra Bazaar trash. After which using the heated needle, they pressed on the boy’s head and back of his neck. The boy cried in pain and the iron needle left strong burn marks on him.

Chief Medical and Health Officer S L Ninama blamed the tribal attitude of averseness towards modern medical practices and friendliness towards superstitious practices, for this incident. Outrightly condemning the incident he said,”Till now the people from tribal area follows blind rituals in the name of treatment. They do not take proper medication but prefer these superstitious beliefs which are absolutely incorrect”.

Ninama demanded strict action against people practising such things.
