Police seize truck carrying 1,205 kg of drugs worth Rs 10 crore

Delhi police arrested two key members of a narcotic drug cartel that was supplying drugs to buyers in the state of Punjab. Approximately 12 quintals of poppy straw which amount to 1,205 kgs was recovered at the time of the arrest by law enforcement officials. The international value of the seized contraband is being estimated at a staggering Rs 10 crore.

The arrest came on Saturday when officials at a checkpoint noticed a truck moving from the Wazirabad Flyover side towards Burari in North-east Delhi. The truck’s license plate (PB11AF-8371) aroused suspicion which led to police vehicles chasing it before intercepting the eight-wheeler near the Burari flyover.

Once they were able to halt the truck, police officers arrested the driver, one Bhim Giri and his accomplice, Ravinder Singh. A search of the truck led the police to the discovery of poppy straw. Officials recovered 60 white plastic bags filled with the poppy straw out of which one contained 25 kgs and the remaining contained 20 kgs each.

Further interrogation revealed that the two men arrested by police were sourcing the poppy straw from Naxal-hit areas in Jharkhand in order to supply it in Punjab. They even told police that their operation has been functional for the past five years now and they have supplied buyers in Punjab with over 800 quintals of poppy straw in that time.
