There was a slight setback in the health condition of M. Karunanidhi who was hospitalized on the early hours of Saturday.

And the hospital has released a statement regarding the nonagenarian’s health condition.

The DMK, earlier in the day, released a photograph showing Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu standing beside Karunanidhi’s hospital bed. With the TV channels flashing images of the picture and commentators pointing out that the leader was doing well even without any support systems such as the ventilator, the huge crowd of party cadres and fans filling up the Alwarpet junction outside the hospital burst into cheering.

Meanwhile, the fans of the 5-times chief minister had crowded the hospital and the leader’s house for an update on his health condition.

“For the past three days, we have been waiting here without food and water. We don’t want anything, give us our thalaiva back. Why has nothing been said on him yet? We want him back,” a supporter of Karunanidhi told the media.

When the crowds got rowdy, the police resorted to a mild lathi charge to control them.

Karunanidhi’s son and DMK working president M K Stalin appealed to the cadre to maintain calm. He said DMK chief’s health was improving. “I appeal to cadre not to create any law and order situation. I appeal to you to maintain calm and extend full cooperation to police,” Stalin said in a statement.

Meanwhile, several party members assembled outside Karunanidhi’s house at Gopalapuram. They shouted, “Kalaignar is 25, and not 94 years old. He will come home alive.”
