Hyderabad: In a tragic  incident, an ambulance driver, who was confirmed with COVID-19, could not get an ambulance for himself and died waiting for it at his home. The incident took place in the Kothagudem district of Telangana. The victim has been identified as 37-year-old Jalla Janakiram, who once transported many patients to hospitals. What was more tragic was that the family of the driver did not have enough money to perform his funeral. Later, a local leader SK Saber Pasha came to the rescue of the family.

According to a report, not only the ambulance, the driver also could not get a bed in the same government hospital where he worked. The hospital asked the driver to remain in home isolation after he was tested positive on Tuesday. However, he died a few hours later waiting for an ambulance. He is survived by wife, two children and parents. “The family was helpless and had no money to arrange items for his funeral. His body was kept in a small room of a house in Gajularamaram Basti the entire night Later, I got to know of the family’s plight and we took it upon ourselves to conduct his funeral,” the report quoted Pasha, who is also a CPI leader, as saying.

Janakiram visited Kothagudem government hospital on August 25 after he fell unwell and was later tested positive for COVID-19. Due to a shortage of beds at the hospital, he was advised to home isolation. However, his condition worsened at home.He called the ambulance to go to the hospital but was told that it would take over an hour to reach his house. As he waited for the ambulance, Janakiram surrendered to COVID-19. For over 15 years, Janakiram worked as an ambulance driver. However, the services of 18 drivers were terminated last year.
