‘Agniveers’ will qualify for gallantry awards; Top military official

New Delhi: Agniveers will be eligible for gallantry medals, the Department of Military Affairs announced on Tuesday, amid demonstrations throughout the country over the Agnipath initiative. ‘ Agnives will be eligible for bravery medals. Patriotism or military service is a passion, not a need for employment ‘, Lieutenant General Anil Puri, Additional Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, stated.

‘Today, 50 to 60 individuals apply for each job to be filled, and only one is chosen, therefore we must choose the best candidate for the country. The selection procedure would be open, fair, objective, and centralised’, he stated. According to the DMA source, the department conducts 80 to 100 bilateral exercises with other nations, and it learned from these engagements that the average age of troops is 26-27 years. ‘We are in the profession of soldiering; this is the country’s most valuable asset, and any answer we devise will be for the protection of the country,’ he explained.

Lieutenant General Bansi Ponappa, Adjutant General, Indian Army, joined Lieutenant General Anil Puri during today’s news conference. ‘The complete recruiting calendar is ready, and the recruitment notification for the Agnipath plan has been released on the ‘Join Indian Army website,’ stated Lieutenant General Bansi Ponappa. On June 17, the three chiefs of the Indian Defense Services applauded the Central Government’s decision to approve the Agnipath Scheme, a recruiting program for Indian youngsters to serve in the Armed Forces.

‘The government has unveiled the Agnipath initiative, which would allow young people to join the military services. The age range will be between 17.5 and 21 years. We are pleased to inform you that the maximum age restriction for the first recruiting has been reduced to 23 years. It will help the young. The Air Force will begin recruiting on June 24 ‘, Air Commander Marshal VR Chaudhari, the chief of the Indian Air Force, stated in a virtual speech on Friday.

The Agnipath Scheme, which was authorized by the government on June 14, was started in an effort to alter the Armed Forces recruiting procedure. After receiving criticism over the new military recruitment process, the Centre has decided to modify the maximum age restriction for recruiting Agniveers. The Centre declared on June 16, 2022, that the Agniveer upper age restriction for recruitments via the Agnipath Scheme has been raised to 23 years from 21 years, as a one-time waiver.

The Indian Air Force also thanked the government for raising the maximum age restriction for recruitment under the Agnipath initiative to 23 from 21 in 2022. COVID-19 effectively halted Army recruiting for more than two years. The Army recruited jawans in 2019-2020, and there has been no more recruitment since then. The Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, on the other hand, had both been recruited in the previous two years.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, the Agnipath plan is intended to allow for a more young profile in the Armed Forces. It will give a chance to the kids who are interested in wearing the uniform by drawing young talent from the society who are more in sync with modern technology trends and ploughing back skilled, disciplined, and motivated manpower into the community.
