A high-level committee for social sciences, led by its chairperson CI Issac, has urged the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to consider a change in school textbooks. The committee recommends replacing the name ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in the curriculum, along with the introduction of ‘classical History’ in place of ancient History. Additionally, the panel advocates for the incorporation of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the curriculum for all subjects. These recommendations are outlined in the committee’s final position paper on social sciences, which is expected to serve as the foundation for developing new NCERT textbooks in this subject.
The proposal from the committee, chaired by CI Issac, is part of a larger effort by the NCERT, which formed 25 committees in December 2021 to prepare position papers on various subjects and themes. The call for this change comes amid a debate about the potential renaming of the country as ‘Bharat.’ Earlier this year, a political controversy emerged when the Modi government issued G20 dinner invitations, hosted by President Droupadi Murmu, under the title “President of Bharat” rather than “President of India.”
