The growing prevalence of sleep disorders across all age groups is a cause for concern. A recent survey conducted by the Agewell Foundation, a civil society organization, examined the sleep patterns of more than 5,000 individuals in May 2023 across 20 states and union territories in India. The findings revealed that 52% of the participants were experiencing difficulties achieving deep, restful sleep. Notably, this issue affected both males (56%) and females (44%) in almost equal proportions. Furthermore, a substantial majority of urban respondents (75%) reported sleeping less than the recommended 5-6 hours per day, and a similar trend was observed among 64% of their rural counterparts.
During the survey, 54% of respondents expressed that as they grew older, they found themselves sleeping less. About 32% noted no significant change in their sleep habits, while 14% claimed they were getting more sleep compared to earlier years. Worryingly, 56% of the respondents expressed dissatisfaction with their current sleep patterns. What’s even more concerning is that sleep disturbances are not confined to the elderly but are increasingly affecting younger individuals, including children. Experts attribute this concerning trend to evolving lifestyles, psychological issues, environmental disruptions, troubled relationships, substance misuse, health conditions, and sedentary habits.
