The death toll resulting from Israeli airstrikes on Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp on Tuesday and Wednesday has now reached 195, with Hamas also releasing five more Israeli hostages. According to the Hamas-run government media office, the Jabalia camp has seen significant casualties, with 120 people still missing under the debris and at least 777 more wounded. Israel has justified its actions by stating that its strikes in Jabalia targeted two Hamas military leaders and alleged that Hamas had command centers and “terror infrastructure” deliberately placed in and around civilian buildings, thus endangering Gazan civilians.
In the aftermath of these events, United Nations human rights officials have labeled the strikes on the camp as potential war crimes. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed serious concerns about the high number of civilian casualties and the extensive destruction caused by the Israeli airstrikes in the Jabalia refugee camp.
While Hamas has released five of its hostages, it has left the families of over 200 others still held in captivity with unanswered questions. These families are seeking clarity on the slow progress of the hostage releases, the selective nature of who is being freed, and the potential risks posed to their loved ones due to Israel’s extensive bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
