9 Injured, 2 officers among victims in Manipur shooting

A firing incident in Manipur left at least nine individuals injured, with casualties including two police officers and a woman. The wounded were promptly hospitalized in Imphal. The incident unfolded in Kangchup, straddling the border of Kangpokpi and Imphal West districts, during the morning hours.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) of the Kuki group claimed that the gunfire ensued in response to an alleged abduction involving four Kuki-Zo tribals, including two women, by a Meitei group earlier that same day. According to the ITLF, the individuals were purportedly abducted near Kangchup Chingkhong village in Kangpokpi district.

In a statement, the ITLF asserted that when tribal volunteers learned of the abductions, they engaged in a firefight with the Meitei group along the frontlines, resulting in several casualties among the Meitei community.

The ITLF disclosed that five tribal civilians were traveling toward L Phaijang village when they were confronted by armed assailants. During the ensuing scuffle, a 65-year-old man named Manglun Haokip from Bolkot village was wounded and rendered unconscious. Believing him to be deceased, he was left behind, but later discovered by CRPF personnel, who transported him to Leimakhong. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently airlifted to a neighboring state.

The ITLF raised concerns about the fate of two women and two men who were allegedly taken captive by the Meitei group. Fearing that they may have been killed or subjected to torture, the ITLF urgently appealed to central security forces to launch a rescue operation.
