Nipah Research One Health Center Inaugurated at Kozhikode Government Medical College

A dedicated center for Nipah virus research has commenced its operations at the Government Medical College in Kozhikode. On Wednesday, the Health Minister, Veena George, officially inaugurated the One Health Centre, marking a significant step in advancing research on the transmission of the Nipah virus to humans and the analysis of data collected through community surveillance.

Minister George highlighted that local efforts have been initiated to develop monoclonal antibodies at the Institute of Advanced Virology in Thonnakkal. Through the implementation of effective treatment and vigilant surveillance, the state has managed to significantly reduce the mortality rate associated with the Nipah virus. Notably, the capacity to conduct sample testing within the Medical College’s laboratory represents a significant achievement in this regard.

Recalling the recent Nipah outbreak that occurred in Kozhikode in August-September, it’s important to note that this outbreak resulted in two fatalities while six individuals contracted the infection. Fortunately, the outbreak was contained within the northern district of Kerala. Kerala had previously encountered the Nipah virus in 2018, with subsequent cases in 2019 and 2021. The most recent outbreak was attributed to fruit bats.

In recognition of the efforts put forth by those engaged in Nipah defense programs, a ceremony was held on Wednesday to honor their contributions. The event was presided over by City Corporation Mayor Beena Philip and was attended by Health Director Dr. K. J. Reena, who presented a comprehensive report on the ongoing initiatives. This center’s establishment represents a significant stride towards advancing our understanding of the Nipah virus and enhancing our preparedness to combat future outbreaks.
