In Montreal, two Jewish schools were targeted by gunfire overnight, according to the police on Thursday, amid escalating tensions in Canada related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Upon arrival in the morning, school staff discovered bullet holes in the front doors of the schools situated in the Cote-des-Neiges neighborhood, the second-largest city in Canada. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.
This incident follows the recent firebombing of a synagogue in Montreal earlier in the week and clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel student groups at Concordia University in the same city. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, visiting Montreal, acknowledged the heightened emotions and fear but urged against attacks, emphasizing that such actions are not reflective of Canadian values. Trudeau expressed the importance of Canada fostering understanding for peaceful resolutions in the Middle East.
Trudeau also noted a “terrifying” increase in anti-Semitism and Islamophobia across the country and stressed the responsibility of every Canadian to recognize and address each other’s concerns. Despite the attack on the synagogue, no injuries were reported, and the Canadian authorities are dealing with the broader issue of rising tensions and incidents related to the Israel-Hamas conflict within the country.
