Legal action to be taken by Manipur self-rule ultimatum over tribal body

In response to the Indigenous Tribal Forum’s (ITLF) recent declaration of ‘self-rule’ in a few Manipur districts, the Manipur government has chosen to file legal action against the group.

The Indigenous Tribal Leader’s Forum (ITLF) and the individuals who threatened the Manipur government to establish a ‘self-government’ in the Kuki Zo inhabited area if the demand for ‘separate administration’ was not met within two weeks, according to the state government, for which appropriate legal action is being taken.

This was stated by Law Minister Th Basanta Kumar to media on Thursday. According to him, the Manipur government strongly condemned the ITLF’s recent declaration of ‘self-government’ in an area controlled by Kuki-Zo, which sought to undermine and disrupt Manipur’s state of law and order.

‘The statement has no legal or constitutional basis. This irresponsible statement appears to be motivated and aimed at vitiating and disturbing the law and order situation of the state,’ said the law minister.

During a meeting on Thursday, the ruling legislators decided to strongly denounce the ITLF statement. In a video message, the general secretary of ITLF, Muan Tombing said, ‘More than six months have passed since the ethnic strife started in Manipur but nothing has been done regarding our demand for a separate administration. If our demand is not heard within a couple of weeks, we will set up our government, irrespective of whether the Centre recognises it.’

The state education minister, Basanta Kumar, addressed the issue that the history of Manipur was misrepresented in the Class 11 textbook, stating that the state government has ordered the book’s sales to be discontinued.

He mentioned that a committee was established in August to oversee like books that might provide false information about Manipur’s past. The minister stated that the committee will review the book and take appropriate action.
