81st edition of the Golden Globe Awards to premiere live on CBS

The 81st edition of the Golden Globe Awards is set to find a new broadcast home, announcing a deal with CBS for its 2024 edition. The award ceremony will be live on CBS and available for streaming on Paramount+ as part of this new agreement. The awards will be aired on Sunday, January 7, following an NFL match.

Jay Penske, the CEO, chairman, and founder of Penske Media, and owner of Dick Clark Productions, expressed pride in bringing the Golden Globes to CBS. He highlighted CBS’s 30-year commitment to the Grammys and its crucial role in their long-term success. Penske emphasized CBS as an ideal partner, understanding the value of live entertainment programming and offering a multiplatform distribution model aligning with modern global content consumption trends.

While the announcement reveals the new broadcast partner, additional details about the agreement remain undisclosed. The Golden Globe Awards, a significant film and television awards show, has faced criticism in recent years, particularly regarding diversity issues within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which constitutes the contest’s jury. The 2024 broadcast marks a transition after the dissolution of the HFPA earlier this year. Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions have acquired the HFPA’s Golden Globe assets, ensuring future management of the awards.

In 2021, revelations about the HFPA, including its lack of a single black member, led to backlash and boycotts by Hollywood’s elite, studios, and others. The 2022 award ceremony faced cancellation, but the awards returned to NBC in 2023 on a one-year basis. The nominations for the 2024 Golden Globes are scheduled to be unveiled on December 11.
