On the eve of the Chhath festival in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, a tragic incident unfolded as at least six individuals lost their lives, and one is currently under hospital care, suspected of consuming illicit liquor. The affected areas include Solman Tola, Narhakala, and Babu Narhat hamlets under the Bajpatti block. The first fatality was reported on Friday evening in Mahuain village, where victims had allegedly consumed spurious liquor. It’s noteworthy that Bihar strictly prohibits the manufacture, consumption, storage, and sale of alcohol under the Excise and Prohibition Policy 2016.
The tragedy prompted a police response, with a team visiting the affected villages upon receiving information about the liquor consumption. The alleged supplier of the illicit liquor is reportedly on the run. Pupari sub-divisional police officer Vinod Kumar mentioned that, upon investigation, it was discovered that two victims were already undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Unfortunately, one of them, identified as Awadhesh Yadav, had succumbed to the effects of the liquor before the police arrived, and his body was sent for post-mortem. The families of two other deceased individuals had already performed funeral rites before the police reached the affected villages.
Sitamarhi’s superintendent of police, Manoj Kumar Tiwari, expressed the intention to take disciplinary action against the police officers and chaukidar responsible for any lapses in handling the situation.
