Farmer committed suicide in Nagpur due to pressure to repay loan

A28-year-old farmer was discovered hanging in his residence in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district in the early hours of Saturday. He hung himself from a ceiling rod in his house’s tin shed.

Vikas Naik, the farmer, was a Tekadi village inhabitant. According to the authorities, the victim’s brother and mother stated that he committed himself due to the stress of repaying the sowing debt. An official, however, stated that no suicide note was found at the scene.

According to the authorities, Vikas and his brother Ashish borrowed money from family members to raise cotton and tur (pigeon peas) on their three-acre property.

‘However, the crops suffered damage due to wild animal attacks. The brothers also delayed spraying,’ the police added. The brothers worked as contract farmers.

A report of accidental death has been filed at the Kanhan police station, and an investigation is ongoing.
