BPCL’s Cabinet Greenlights Rs 150 Cr Biogas Plant in Brahmapuram

The Kerala Cabinet, currently on a tour as part of the state-wide outreach program ‘Nava Kerala Sadas,’ convened at Perlview Hotel in Thalassery. During the morning meeting, the Cabinet granted approval for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)’s proposed Rs 150 crore compressed biogas plant aimed at addressing biowaste issues within Kochi Corporation limits. The 10-acre land in Brahmapuram, owned by Kochi Corporation, will be allocated for the plant, with BPCL overseeing its establishment.

“The plant is designed to treat 150 metric tons of biowaste daily, and the compressed biogas produced will be utilized by BPCL, covering the entire construction cost,” stated a Cabinet spokesperson. Additionally, the government will provide reduced-rate electricity and water for the construction, aiming to complete the project within 15 months.

Once operational, the plant will distribute biofertilizers to farmers, release treated wastewater, and manage non-degradable waste through the state-run Clean Kerala company. This initiative is poised to offer a lasting solution to Kochi Corporation’s biowaste predicament, serving a population of 7 lakh and over 1.6 lakh houses.

In a broader scope, the Cabinet approved a 11th salary revision for part-time and contingent employees of the State Cooperative Union. Furthermore, the creation of posts for Deputy General Manager and Computer Assistant Grade 2 was also given the green light.
