Tunnel Collapse : Rescuers Closer to Trapped Workers via 800 mm Pipes

With the clock ticking for the evacuation of 41 trapped laborers in the Silkyara tunnel, the government has intensified rescue efforts in Uttarkashi. Relief workers are working tirelessly to safely extract the workers, who will be transported directly to Chinyalisaur Hospital, situated 32 km from the tunnel, once evacuated.

The extraction process involves pulling the workers through an 800 mm pipe using a small wheeled stretcher and a rope. After emerging from the tunnel, they will undergo immediate examination at the hospital via ambulance. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami rushed to Uttarkashi to boost morale and support the ongoing rescue mission.

Colonel Deepak Patil, overseeing the Silkyara tunnel operation, provided an update on progress, stating that nine pipes, drilled horizontally up to 48 meters, are already in place. Two more pipes remain to be drilled, but the meticulous process of welding and cooling each section is time-consuming.

Having endured over 260 hours in the collapsed tunnel, the trapped workers likely experienced significant physical strain. As a precaution, they are advised to limit interactions after being rescued. The operation reflects a race against time, with rescue teams working relentlessly to bring the laborers to safety.
