On Friday morning, the air quality in the city shifted to the ‘severe’ category, breaking a six-day streak in the ‘very poor’ range until Thursday. Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) at 7:05 am on Friday registered at 401 (severe), contrary to Thursday’s forecasts predicting the AQI to remain ‘very poor’ on Friday and potentially reach ‘severe’ only by Saturday. The Early Warning System, utilized by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the NCR, had earlier projected that Delhi’s air quality would stay in the ‘very poor’ category on Friday, escalate to ‘severe’ on Saturday, and revert to ‘very poor’ on Sunday.
As of 4 pm on Thursday, Delhi’s 24-hour average AQI recorded at 390 (very poor), a marginal increase from the 395 (very poor) recorded at the same time on Wednesday, according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s bulletin. The air quality early warning system developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune anticipates pollution levels to fluctuate between the “very poor” and “severe” categories over the next five to six days.
