The tragic event of ‘Dhishna,’ organized by the School of Engineering at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), unfolded as an ill-fated chapter in the revival of the annual Tech Fest, dormant due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Initiated on Friday (November 24), the three-day event aimed to be a “remarkable revival” according to its dedicated website, marking CUSAT’s resumption of Dhishna after a three-year hiatus, with the last tech fest held in 2020.
The unfortunate incident occurred on the second day, preceding a music concert by renowned playback singer Nikhita Gandhi, in an open-air auditorium on the campus.
Day one showcased cutting-edge technologies, emphasizing their applications and potential misuse. Robo Games, including Robo War, Robo Survival, Robo Soccer, Autonomy Race, and Drag Race, were significant highlights, featuring 10 student-built robots.
Another major event was the planned launch of a student-engineered rocket, aiming to reach an altitude of 10,000 feet. The diverse program also included a dance battle, dirt bike race, RC car show, and soapy football matches, in addition to Nikhita Gandhi’s concert.
Tragically, the fest that aimed at celebrating technological prowess ended in sorrow, casting a somber shadow over CUSAT’s attempt at revival.
