The reality TV spinoff of Squid Game, known as Squid Game: The Challenge, has gained attention on Netflix despite receiving unfavorable reviews. Recent revelations from one of its participants have sparked interest, highlighting scripted elements in the show.
A key moment in Squid Game: The Challenge involves the Dalgona cookie game, a recreation of one of Squid Game’s iconic challenges. In the second episode, titled “The Man with the Umbrella,” contestant number 299, Spencer Hawkins, became a focal point as he navigated the intense competition.
Contrary to the apparent reality portrayed on-screen, Spencer revealed that only one-fourth of the room actively participated in the challenge at any given time. The remaining three-fourths were instructed to pretend, mimicking the actions of working on a cookie. This disclosure has introduced a new perspective on the authenticity of the challenges in the show.
In a TikTok video, Spencer clarified that his choice to create an umbrella-shaped cookie was independent and not influenced or coerced by others. Despite the emotional strain evident on camera, he emphasized, “I wasn’t going to put the decision of picking the umbrella onto anyone else.”
A review of Squid Game: The Challenge by WION was critical, describing it as a “half-baked imitation” lacking the substance and style that made Squid Game a cultural phenomenon. The review suggests that the reality show creators may have overlooked the irony present in Squid Game, resulting in a misguided attempt to strip it of its anti-capitalist undertones, ultimately creating a cringe-worthy and misguided cash grab.
