Unseasonal rains in Gujarat claimed the lives of 24 individuals, leaving 23 injured, and resulting in the death of 71 animals, according to officials on Monday. The state in the west has been facing unexpected rainfall for the past two days. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported one fatality in each of the following areas: Ahmedabad, Amreli, Anand, Kheda, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Panchmahal, Patan, Botad, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Surat, and Surendranagar.
Additionally, lightning strikes caused two deaths in Tapi, three each in Banaskantha and Bharuch, and four in Dahod district. Since Sunday morning, Gujarat has witnessed heavy unseasonal rain and hailstones in various regions, impacting agriculture. State cabinet minister Rishikesh Patel expressed concerns about potential losses in farm produce, noting that 50 to 60 percent of Gujarat’s districts received rainfall ranging from one to 144 millimeters, in line with predictions from the state meteorological department.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert (64.5 to 115.5 mm) for Surat, Navsari, and Valsad in south Gujarat. The IMD’s latest bulletin anticipates dry weather in the state from Tuesday, with a projected decrease of four to five degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures. The unprecedented rain also disrupted the ceramic industry in Morbi district, Saurashtra, forcing factory closures. The untimely rainfall resulted from a cyclonic circulation over the northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Saurashtra and Kutch regions, as reported by the IMD in an earlier bulletin.
