Govt Introduces Fresh Protocol: Anganwadi Workers to Identify and Assist Children with Disabilities

Anganwadi workers are set to play a crucial role in early screening for disabilities, marking a significant shift in their responsibilities. The newly launched National Outreach Programme on Anganwadi Protocol for Divyang Children introduces key features such as early screening for physical and intellectual disabilities, along with support services and community inclusion. Smriti Zubin Irani, the Minister of Women and Child Development, unveiled the protocol, aiming for comprehensive improvements in the well-being of infants and young children with disabilities through early intervention and specialized assistance.

The program focuses on educating and supporting families and communities to enhance the participation of disabled children in society. Recognizing that early detection and intervention can prevent a significant portion of disabilities, the initiative involves the 14 lakh Anganwadi workers, along with ASHA and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). In addition to identification, these frontline workers will assist families in applying for Unique Disability IDs (UDID) and Disability certificates, facilitating access to health, education, and financial support. Minister Irani highlighted the historic aspect of Anganwadi workers now actively participating in the screening process for identifying disabilities.
