Remains of Wayanad man exhumed following family’s medical negligence complaint.

In an unusual turn of events, the remains of Vadakke Kannamangalath Stebin, a 28-year-old man who passed away at a private hospital in Kalpetta on December 1, were exhumed on Tuesday evening at a church cemetery in Pulpally. The exhumation was prompted by the filing of a complaint by Stebin’s relatives, alleging medical negligence as the cause of his death.

Stebin, a resident of Cholikkara, Sasimala, near Pulpally, had undergone nose surgery at the private hospital in Kalpetta and reportedly died after receiving anesthesia. Initially, the family had not raised any complaints, and Stebin’s body was laid to rest after the last rites at the Infant Jesus Church cemetery in Sasimala, without a postmortem examination.

However, following concerns, the family submitted complaints to the District Police Chief, District Collector, District Medical Officer, and the Health Minister on Monday. The exhumation process, overseen by RS Saji, the tahsildar of Vythiri, and involving personnel from the Pulpally police station, took place. An assistant police surgeon examined the body, and later that evening, it was transferred to the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, for a postmortem examination.
