South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, renowned for his role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” was discovered dead in an apparent suicide in a vehicle at a park in central Seoul. The 48-year-old actor had been under investigation for alleged drug use, including marijuana and other psychoactive substances. The scandal led to repercussions in his career, with reports of him being dropped from television and commercial projects. Lee Sun-kyun, a graduate of Korea National University of Arts, made his acting debut in 2001 and gained acclaim for various roles, including a charismatic chef and a diligent architectural engineer.
Internationally recognized for his role as the wealthy patriarch in Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite,” Lee’s last film, “Sleep,” received critical acclaim and featured in the Cannes festival’s Critics’ Week section. In late October, Lee apologized to the public before meeting with investigators, expressing regret for the “unpleasant incident” and the pain it caused his family. South Korea has strict drug laws, and even legal drug use abroad can lead to prosecution upon return. President Yoon Suk Yeol has called for stricter measures against drug trafficking in the country, emphasizing a commitment to a “drug-free” society. Lee Sun-kyun is survived by his wife, actress Jeon Hye-jin, and two sons.
