Chennai: Popular Tamil actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakanth tested positive for COVID-19. The party informed that Vijayakanth has been put on a ventilator due to breathing issue. Earlier in November, Vijayakanth was hospitalized.
In September 2020 during the first wave of the Covid, the actor-turned-politician tested positive for Covid-19 and underwent treatment in Miot International in Chennai.

Vijayakanth was the leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly during 2011-16.
Meanwhile, India reported a total of 109 JN.1 COVID variant cases as of December 26. As many as 36 cases were reported from Gujarat, 34 from Karnataka, 14 from Goa, 9 from Maharashtra, 6 from Kerala, 4 from Rajasthan, 4 from Tamil Nadu and 2 from Telangana. On Wednesday, India recorded 529 fresh COVID-19 cases in a single day, while the country’s active infection count stood at 4,093. 3 new fatalities — 2 from Karnataka and 1 from Gujarat — were reported in 24 hours.
