The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notification instructing universities to cease admissions to MPhil courses for the 2023-24 academic year. Furthermore, the UGC has cautioned prospective students against enrolling in MPhil programs, emphasizing that the degree is no longer recognized.
According to UGC Secretary Manish Joshi, it has come to the UGC’s attention that certain universities are actively seeking new applications for the MPhil (Master of Philosophy) program. Joshi pointed out that Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022 explicitly states that higher educational institutions should refrain from offering any MPhil program.
In response to this, Joshi urged university authorities to promptly halt admissions to MPhil programs for the 2023-24 academic year. Additionally, he advised students against pursuing admission in any MPhil program, given the non-recognition of the degree.
