India has reported 797 new cases of COVID-19, marking the highest daily count in 225 days, with the number of active cases standing at 4,091, as per the health ministry’s update on Friday. Over the past 24 hours, five new fatalities related to Covid were recorded, including two from Kerala and one each from Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu. This marks a notable increase compared to the daily cases dropping to double digits until December 5. The surge is attributed to the emergence of a new variant and colder weather conditions. In comparison, on May 19, the country had reported 865 new cases.
During the peak of the pandemic, daily case numbers were in the lakhs. Since the pandemic’s onset in early 2020, over 4.5 crore people have been infected, resulting in more than 5.3 lakh deaths across the country in approximately four years. However, the number of recoveries from the disease has surpassed 4.4 crore, with a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as reported on the ministry’s website. Additionally, the country has administered 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines, according to the same source.
