Gunman breaks into Colorado Supreme Court building days after Trump verdict

In the early hours of January 2, a gunman, identified as 44-year-old Brandon Olsen, forcefully entered the Colorado Supreme Court building in the United States. The incident unfolded around 1:15 am, following Olsen’s escape from a car crash near the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center. Olsen, armed with a pistol, proceeded to shoot through a window and gain access to the building.

Once inside, Olsen confronted an unarmed security guard, brandishing his weapon and taking keys to access other floors. He proceeded to the seventh floor, where he fired multiple shots. The suspect was apprehended around 3 am on charges of robbery, burglary, and arson. The Denver Fire Department extinguished a fire that Olsen had started in a stairwell.

The aftermath of the incident revealed water damage from sprinklers on the seventh floor, along with burnt documents and bullet holes. The police report detailed the extensive consequences of the gunman’s actions.

This unsettling event occurred amid an atmosphere of tension for Colorado’s justices, who have been receiving threats from the public. The threats escalated following a recent ruling by the Colorado court that barred former President Donald Trump from participating in the presidential campaign. The court invoked a rare constitutional provision, employing a 4-3 ruling to disqualify individuals engaging in insurrection from holding office. Trump, accused of encouraging insurrection attempts in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, faces opposition to the court’s decision, with the Colorado Republican Party appealing the ruling. The incident at the Colorado Supreme Court building adds another layer of complexity to the already charged political climate surrounding Trump’s legal challenges.
