With just a few weeks left until the 2024 Parliamentary election, the Election Commission of India has introduced revisions to the rules governing the allocation of common symbols for both Registered and Unregistered Political Parties (RUPPs), contingent on specific conditions. The commission’s announcement on Thursday outlined the eligibility criteria for RUPPs to secure the ‘concession of common symbol allotment.’ To qualify, these parties must have submitted contribution reports, audited annual accounts for the past three financial years, and election expenditure statements for their last two contested elections.
The Election Commission clarified that it is currently receiving applications from concerned parties, adhering to the prescribed proforma for common symbol allocation as per the guidelines laid out in the Election Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) Order of 1968. RUPPs, encompassing newly registered parties, political groups yet to achieve a designated vote percentage or national/state party status, and those that haven’t participated in elections since their registration, fall under the purview of these revised regulations.
