Uttarakhand delays action against Patanjali Ayurved

Uttarakhand authorities continue to delay action against Patanjali Ayurved, led by yoga guru Ramdev, despite repeated violations of laws governing misleading advertisements for Ayush products. This inaction persists despite directives from the Prime Minister’s Office and criticism from the Supreme Court.

According to the Ayurveda and Unani Services Licensing Authority of Uttarakhand, revealed in response to an RTI application filed by Dr. K V Babu, a Kerala-based ophthalmologist, the state authorities instructed the Haridwar drug inspector to conduct inspections and take necessary measures. This response, received on March 4, mirrors previous instances where similar directives were issued to address concerns regarding Patanjali’s misleading advertisements for products related to diabetes, obesity, thyroid, and heart diseases.

Dr. Babu, an RTI activist, had previously reached out to various authorities, including the Prime Minister’s Office, expressing concerns about Patanjali’s violations of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. However, despite his efforts and subsequent directives from the PMO to the Ayush Ministry for appropriate action, no significant steps have been taken against the company by either the Drugs Controller General of India or the Uttarakhand State Licensing Authorities.
