EC announces record cash seizures, surpassing 2019 election totals, with Rs 4,650 crore confiscated since March 1. Notably, a substantial portion of the seizures, about 45%, consists of drugs and narcotics, indicating a heightened focus on combating illicit substances during elections. This achievement is attributed to coordinated efforts involving comprehensive planning, enhanced collaboration among agencies, citizen engagement, and technological innovations.
In addition to cash seizures, significant quantities of liquor, precious metals, and other valuables have been confiscated, totaling to approximately Rs 1,447 crore. Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra reported the highest seizure amounts among the states. The rigorous enforcement measures are part of the EC’s strategy to uphold the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the high-stakes Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to commence on April 19 and culminate with vote counting on June 4.
Meanwhile, the EC has taken disciplinary actions against officials found neglecting their duties or engaging in biased practices. The suspension of a flying squad team leader in Tamil Nadu and the removal of the DIG of Murshidabad in West Bengal underscore the commission’s commitment to ensuring fair and impartial conduct during elections. Additionally, strict measures have been imposed on government servants found violating the Code of Conduct by assisting politicians in campaigning, highlighting the EC’s resolve to maintain electoral integrity and transparency.
