Ultra-processed food associated with 32 health problems: Study

Study finds that consuming ultra-processed foods is linked to a higher likelihood of experiencing 32 significant health issues, spanning from early mortality to various diseases such as cancer, mental health disorders, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal conditions.

Ultra-processed foods encompass a range of products like packaged snacks, sugary beverages, ready-to-eat meals, and instant noodles. These items undergo extensive industrial processing and typically contain additives and preservatives while lacking essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Often, they are high in sugar, saturated fat, and salt, making up a substantial portion of daily energy intake in some countries.

A recent Australian study published in The BMJ examined 14 articles involving nearly 10 million participants over the past three years. The research consistently found that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods correlates with an elevated risk of various health problems, including a 50% higher chance of cardiovascular disease-related mortality, increased rates of anxiety, common mental disorders, type 2 diabetes, obesity, sleep issues, depression, and overall mortality.
