Jaundice cases surge in Ernakulam’s Vengoor panchayat amidst rising temperatures

A surge in jaundice cases in Vengoor panchayat, Ernakulam district, has prompted the health department’s intervention, with 51 reported cases prompting an emergency review meeting. Affected residents have sought treatment in private hospitals across Perumbavoor, Ernakulam, and Kottayam Medical College Hospital, surpassing initial health department estimates. The outbreak, confirmed on April 17, has escalated due to delayed cleaning of the water reservoir used for drinking.

Residents express dissatisfaction with the response from authorities, criticizing both the panchayat and health department for insufficient warnings and awareness efforts amidst the disease spread. Despite concerns, the panchayat president reassures the public of no cause for alarm, promising additional measures to be discussed in the review meeting. Meanwhile, Kozhikode has seen outbreaks of diseases like dengue fever and jaundice, with over 8,500 individuals seeking treatment for fever in government hospitals within two weeks, indicating the need for urgent action.

The situation in Kozhikode remains alarming, with a daily average of over 250 fever-related hospital visits and a noticeable increase in private hospital admissions. Last Wednesday witnessed a significant surge, with 821 patients seeking treatment for fever. This emphasizes the widespread nature of the fever outbreak and underscores the urgency of implementing effective measures to address the situation.
