PM Modi honored with Nigeria’s second-highest award

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Nigeria’s second-highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on Sunday, making him only the second foreign dignitary to receive this distinction after Queen Elizabeth in 1969. This marks the 17th international award received by Modi, highlighting his global recognition. During his visit, the first by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria in 17 years, he was welcomed in Abuja by Minister for Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who presented him with the symbolic “Key to the City,” representing the trust and honor of the Nigerian people.

Modi’s visit to Nigeria is the first leg of his three-nation tour at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Following his engagements in Nigeria, the prime minister will travel to Brazil to participate in the G20 summit, where he will engage with other world leaders. The final stop of his trip will be Guyana, marking another significant step in strengthening India’s ties with the Caribbean region.
