You might have observed that people who settle down to a set pattern or routine in their life are more happier. If this was just an observation till yesterday, it is a scientific finding from now. A Lancet Psychiatry study of 91000 people have found that a disrupted body clock had connections with bipolar disorder, depression and other problems. So in case if you haven’t already, start settling in to a rhythmic routine.

?People involved in the study had worn activity monitors to check how disrupted their clocks were. People who were found highly active at night or inactive during the day were termed as “disrupted”. Such people were between 6 and 10 percent more likely to have issues like mood disorders than someone who had an inactive night and active day. Prof Smith, a psychiatrist said that this is not a huge difference, but it is ‘robust across a lot of interesting outcomes’.

The study didn’t exactly consider the use of mobile phone but Prof Daniel Smith, from the University of Glasgow researchers said that it was ‘likely’ that some of the people who have difficulties might be using social media at night. He added that he gets rid of the phone at 10 o clock at night because human beings didn’t evolve to be looking at screens when they should be sleeping.

The body clock has an important role in our body. Our moods, hormone levels, metabolic activities all tend to vary according to the rhythm we have set. Smith said ‘The study tells us the body clock is really important for mood disorders and should be given greater priority in research and in way we organise societies’.
