Experts warn against some quick-fixes people resort to while trying to lose weight

During the festive season, characterized by celebrations, family gatherings, and indulgent meals, people often find themselves tempted to set aside strict diet regimens. As a result, some individuals may turn to quick fixes, such as the use of diabetes drugs for weight loss. This approach has gained popularity in recent years, even receiving endorsements from celebrities. However, experts are cautioning against the use of diabetes drugs as a rapid solution for weight loss.

Dr. Simon Cork, a senior lecturer in physiology at Anglia Ruskin University, emphasizes that diabetes drugs are not a quick fix for weight loss. While these medications may be used to address obesity, they require individuals to adhere to strict diet and exercise regimens. Merely taking the drugs will not prevent weight gain for those who overindulge during the Christmas period.

Dr. Harshal Deshmukh, a consultant in endocrinology and diabetes and a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Hull, shares similar concerns. He warns against using appetite suppressants in an attempt to counter the effects of festive season indulgence, describing it as an ill-advised approach. Doctors typically prescribe these medications based on specific indications and conduct thorough evaluations, considering contraindications. The gradual titration of these drugs over time is crucial for optimal effectiveness, making their haphazard use during the festive season not recommended. Additionally, acquiring these medications from online pharmacies without a comprehensive evaluation is strongly discouraged.

The caution from experts underscores the importance of adopting sustainable and medically supervised approaches to weight management, rather than seeking quick fixes that may pose risks to health.
