Heavy rains since morning failed to deter thousands of yoga enthusiasts in Lucknow, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out the mat on the 3rd International Yoga Day celebrations at the Ambedkar Sabha Sthal .He said “Yoga gives you zero-cost health insurance”
Around 50,000 people are attending the event, among them Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and key ministers of his cabinet. Yoga teacher Ramdev and BJP chief Amit Shah started the celebrations in Ahmedabad at 5.30 am. Three years ago, PM Modi persuaded the United Nations to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day. Events are being held in 180 nations across the world today.
Here are the 10 points on International yoga day celebrations:
1.Dressed in a white T-shit and loose white trousers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people from the stage he shared with Yogi Adityanath. “I welcome all yoga lovers present here and those performing yoga in various corners of the world. Today, yoga has become a part of so many lives. Yoga’s popularity out of India is high and it has connected the world with India,” he said.
2.The wet beginning to the day did not deter enthusiasts in Delhi or Lucknow. Thousands could be seen going about the venues, clutching umbrellas or wrapped in raincoats. In Lucknow, people were seen using yoga mats as umbrellas and raincoats as yoga mats.
3.Despite the rain, the streets of Delhi’s Connaught Place wore a festive look as old and young rolled out colourful mats. Programmes were also held at Lodhi Garden, Nehru Park, Talkatora Garden and India Gate.
4.Union ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Vijay Goel, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and NDA’s presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind took part in the celebrations in Connaught Place.
5.Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu is expected to attend the event in Mumbai while Home Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to be in Sujanpur Tira of Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district to perform various asanas at a yoga event.
6.PM Modi — who participated in celebrations at Delhi in 2015 and Chandigarh in 2016, has appealed to three generations of the family to perform Yoga together, take a picture and upload it online. Over 200 million people were estimated to have participated in the event last year, a figure that the government hopes would go up this year.
7.Yoga events will be held through the day in nearly 180 countries across the world, starting from the United Nations headquarters that has been lit up with images of yoga postures. The Permanent Mission of India to the UN will organise a session with renowned yoga teachers, while Israel will have an event in its capital, Tel Aviv.
8.The United Nations will issue special stamps commemorating the International Yoga Day. The UN postal agency will issue the new special event sheet consisting of stamps with images of the sacred Indian sound “Om” and various yogic postures.
9.Several events were held across China, which promised to hold the second biggest celebrations of the day after India. It started this week with a demonstration by participants – the Indian Embassy called them Yoga Ambassadors – as they practised poses at the Great Wall. There are many more events planned.
10.Like previous years, President Pranab Mukherjee is expected to open yoga celebrations at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This year on World Health Day, Mr Mukherjee asked doctors to use social support systems and yoga to support people suffering from mental health disorder.
