The Kerala Health Department has issued a statewide caution following the confirmation of a mysterious virus outbreak in China, leading to a surge in respiratory illnesses, especially among children. During a Friday meeting reviewing infectious diseases, the spike in pneumonia cases in China was discussed. Health Minister Veena George stressed the need for high vigilance and online monitoring of those who traveled from China and their children.
In response to the situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not imposed trade or travel restrictions but is closely monitoring the outbreak. The Programme for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED) reported the mysterious pneumonia cases in Northern China, prompting the WHO to seek additional information from Chinese authorities.
China attributed the rise in respiratory illnesses to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, with a cold wave contributing to increased pneumonia cases. Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan of the IMA National Covid Taskforce urged caution against misinformation and assured that the WHO would provide accurate data.
The Union Health Ministry in India is closely monitoring the health situation in China but assures that the country faces no risks from the reported respiratory diseases in Northern China. The ministry dismissed concerns about the rise in children’s pneumonia cases, stating there is no presence of unusual disease-causing pathogens in India.
